Inspired by Nick's (Southsix) pictures of a badly decayed Quad, I decided that it is time I got of my backside and tried to make a diorama of a wreck. Now, I have never attempted to do this before and I rather lack the skillset to do it. However, I will never have the skillset if I don't have a go will I? So here we go. Please don't expect too much, I will try but I have so much to learn and this will be my classroom. I am not trying to replicate the photos posted on this forum by Nick but to use them as inspiration to learn and apply as many elements as I can. From my 'Shelf of Doom' I have an old Tamiya Quad kit that has been part assembled into three main parts. The body, interior and chassis. This should still allow me to make modifications to the parts to the degree I need. First off, have a play at thinning the wheel arches plastic to get some rust holes in. One small step for modelkind, one giant leap for me Edit: I forgot to say, please feel free to throw advice at this little project even if it is "put the knife down and step away"

Thanks for the comments guys :-) Made a start on the chassis. Chose this first as it will barely be visible on the finished item. My first attempt at the salt chipping turned out as well as I could have expected. And a little more damage, rust holes to the body work. This is as much as I will be doing as I am more likely to mess it up if I keep going. I have roughed up the bottom of the doors and lower edges of the body where I intend to do rusty patches. The majority of the body will be faded and chipped paint (I hope!) Need to grunge up the engine and the cab interior. Oh, and sort out some hinges for the doors, what were Tamiya thinking of when they just moulded blocks away from the door edges?

Been working on the paint and washes as well as a bit of streaking grime. All new to me but having a ball with it even though it will never compare to the great work I see on here

Looks pretty good mate! Is this still the salt technique?

Thanks guys, really having fun with this The stage it is at in the above picture, all chipping is using salt. I like the way it affects the paint around where the salt was, a sort of oxidised effect that fades the paint. No control over that part of the effect but in this case it has worked out fine.

That is it for today. Done more chipping, got the old girl on her wheels and started on a tarp for the top oh, and made a simple little base. Still a while to go, not even started on the inside yet as I am not sure what to do, got a few ideas but may be beyond my ability so I need to simplify the ideas a bit.

Slow and steady Graham. This is turning out just great. Like the bubbling paint effects and this deserves to be finished right. Experiment with the ideas you want to do on the interior on junk parts until you get what you want. You'll surprise yourself at what you can achieve.

She's come a long way. Looking fantastic so far. These Quads would be great in a 'rustbucket starter kit' because of the plates and engles to work with.
